Where is the tension between your passion and something else in your life? These interior dimensions of engagement are what make a passion essay memorable.
Unusual Topics vs. Common Topics
Essays about cooking, soccer, and music are written by thousands of applicants. This doesn't make them impossible topics — it means the execution has to be exceptional. An unusual passion (mycology, competitive crosswords, ancient coin collecting, competitive debate over contract law) naturally generates reader interest. But a beautifully written essay about soccer can outperform a bland essay about an obscure hobby. Topic is a starting advantage, not a guarantee.
Connecting Passion to Purpose
The strongest passion essays end with some sense of where this interest is taking you — not necessarily a career declaration, but an indication of what you want to explore, understand, or contribute because of what you've discovered through this passion. Look for what you return to voluntarily, what you talk about at length without prompting, what you'd explore if you had unlimited time. Even a mild recurring interest can generate a strong essay with honest reflection.
Should my passion connect to my intended major?
